This iced blackberry latte recipe is an inventive way to enjoy your morning lattes at home while infusing a big burst of berry flavor! It uses this homemade blackberry simples syrup to sweeten up freshly brewed espresso.

An iced blackberry latte, with blackberry cold foam, sits on a wooden coaster and is garnished with fresh blackberries.

While I prefer mine over ice, you can enjoy it hot, too! Growing up with a live-in Italian grandma meant we got a crash course in all things Italian culture, including espresso! While Italians usually take coffee very seriously, I’ve spent over a decade making homemade drinks a little more fun. 😏

💕 why you gotta make this blackberry flavored latte…

💜 berrylicious. Coffee + berries = a match made in heaven! The jammy taste of blackberries intensifies the fruity notes of coffee!

⏱️ quick & easy. Including brew time, this coffee takes mere minutes to make. Your morning commute will thank you!

💰 cost-efficient. While it’s nice to splurge every now and then, making your own lattes at home is a great way to save money!

🛒 ingredients

Ingredients used to make an iced blackberry latte sit on a yellow terazzo countertop.
  • blackberry simple syrup – the blackberry flavor in this latte comes from a homemade simple syrup that’s been infused with the sweet and jammy flavor of fresh blackberries! Trust me, take the time to make it!
  • espresso – you’ll need one double shot per beverage, that’s two full ounces of espresso, please!
  • milk – I use whole milk in most of my lattes, because the flavor is just SO much better, but you can use the milk of your choice. Dairy milk usually foams better than non-dairy.

💡tips & tricks for getting it right

🍽️ serving tips

Choose your glass

  • You can use whatever glasses you have on hand, just be sure to choose one that can hold at least 8 ounces because the ice will melt a little when you add the espresso.
  • If you’re making the drink hot, be sure to use a heat-safe glass. Unfortunately a lot of super cute and trending glassware isn’t heat-safe.

Garnish

  • I love to garnish these lattes with fresh blackberries that have been skewered on a cocktail pick.
  • If you have a little extra time, you can pop the berries on a cocktail pick into the freezer. When you serve them, they’ll get a beautiful frost on them!
  • If you’re feeling EVEN MORE extra, you can dehydrate berries and grind them into a powder, or buy freeze dried berries, and sprinkle the powder over the top!

ℹ️ troubleshooting tips

  • not enough flavor – you can add as much simple syrup as you want to get even more sweet berry flavor. I like adding 1-2 ounces depending on how sweet I want my coffee.
  • not enough foam – technically iced lattes don’t *need* foam, but I love a cold foam moment. If your milk isn’t frothing, it could be too hot, too cold, or it might just be finicky. Some non-dairy milk just doesn’t foam as well as dairy milks. Luckily, this latte will taste great whether or not it froths!

Missing an ingredient? No problem. Check out these tried-and-true substitutions, or comment below with your question. I’m here to help you troubleshoot!

  • non-dairy milk – you can use the milk of your choice, but keep in mind that it could affect the latte foam and color.
  • hot coffee – prefer your lattes hot? You can skip the ice and serve it with steamed milk instead.
  • cold brew or strong coffee – if you don’t have a way to make espresso at home, you can use strongly brewed coffee or cold brew to make this latte. Just be sure to let the coffee cool if you are brewing it before making this recipe.
  • babyccino – skip the espresso and serve this blackberry latte “steamer” style using just frothed milk and blackberry syrup. This is a kid friendly variation, and it’s also great for people who don’t drink coffee but want to join in at brunch!

🧰 equipment needed & storage tips

🧰 tools needed

  • espresso machine– you’ll need an espresso machine or espresso maker to brew your coffee at home. You don’t need to spend $1,000 on a machine to get good espresso at home, though I have and love our Breville Barista Pro. 😅 I have used Nespresso makers in the past and have friends who swear by them, too!
  • handheld milk frother – this handheld frother is super convenient when making homemade coffee beverages. It’s a quick and easy way to whip up a cold foam for one!
  • drinking glass – use whatever glass you have on hand for your iced latte.

🫙 storage tips

Drink your latte shortly after making it because of the addition of a milk-based foam.

The ingredients don’t hold up well to storage, but you can store it for up to 24 hours in the fridge in an airtight container. Just be aware that the foam will dissipate as it is stored.

💬 q+a

Can I add syrup to my milk frother?

Always consult your espresso machine’s user manual. Usually, it is fine to add syrup to the milk in your milk frother. I have done it with our Breville Barista Pro with great results! Just be sure to clean the machine throughly after use.
