Growing up with a live-in Italian immigrant grandmother means you make certain parts of Italian culture part of your daily life, like espresso. Even though Italians take their espresso very seriously, my grandma also impressed the importance of having fun. • espresso – The base of any good latte. You’ll need a double shot of espresso for each drink you make.
  • milk – this recipe uses dairy milk, specifically whole milk, because it foams the best. However, you can use whichever milk you prefer.
  • lavender honey simple syrup – This is the star of the show! This floral infused syrup gives the latte a sweet and delicate flavor that makes this beverage truly special. Take the time to make your syrup for the best tasting coffee experience. Trust me! 😘
  • ice – Yes! Ice is an ingredient, especially if you’re making your lattes cold! Choose your favorite ice, and keep in mind that smaller cubes will melt faster than large ones.

🍳 how to make your lavender latte at home

Step 1 of making a lavender honey latte: brewing the espresso.

Step 1: Brew a double espresso following the instructions on your preferred brewing method. Allow it to cool slightly.

Step 2: Add the lavender honey simple syrup to a mixing glass.

A hand holding a pastel-colored milk frother whips milk in a glass measuring cup on a purple countertop, preparing the perfect base for a Lavender Honey Latte, with a soft-focus background of kitchen items.

Step 3: Pour the milk into the mixing glass with the lavender honey syrup. Using a hand frother, mix the lavender honey syrup with the milk until it’s nice and frothy.

Step 4: Fill your preferred glass with ice. Pour your espresso into the glass with ice.

Step 6: Garnish with a sprig of culinary lavender or dried lavender buds and serve!

Hint: If you are serving hot lattes, you can skip cooling the espresso. You’ll also want to steam the milk to heat it while you froth it.

💡tips & tricks for getting it right

🍽️ how to serve your floral coffees

  • spring or summer brunch – This is the perfect coffee beverage to serve to guests at a breakfast or brunch. It looks like it took a lot of work to make, but only you will know it truly took just a little effort. 😌 Pair it with a homemade granola parfait and get ready for compliments!
  • Mother’s day – this coffee is also the perfect latte to serve a mom (or a mother figure) for mothers day breakfast in bed!
  • culinary grade flowers – make sure you are using culinary grade lavender that is specifically safe for consumption. Not all flowers are grown and harvested equal, and ones that are decorative are not safe for eating or drinking. You can find lavender buds and lavender sprigs that are culinary grade at local specialty food grocery stores or online!

ℹ️ troubleshooting tips

  • milk won’t froth – Make sure to use a milk that has a higher fat content for the best foaming. Non-fat milk will foam up, but the air bubbles will be bigger, so it will also break down faster. Non-dairy milks like oat milk can foam, but others don’t foam at all. 🫣 The good news is: the drink is still delicious whether your milk foams or not.
  • not enough lavender flavor – you can add in more syrup to the milk to get a more intense lavender honey flavor, or you can drizzle extra syrup on top of your lattes.

♻️ customize your lavender latte

  • non-dairy milk – you can make this latte using your milk of choice like oat milk, almond milk, or soy milk. Keep in mind that some non-dairy milks don’t froth as well as others, and you may need to use a specific barista blend of milk to get it light and foamy.
  • cold brew concentrate or strong coffee – if you don’t have a way to make espresso at home, you can use strongly brewed coffee or cold brew concentrate. You can also use instant espresso if you’re in a pinch!
  • frappé style – blend the espresso and ice in a blender, then top with the whipped lavender foam for a frozen beverage! You can also make this drink using frozen espresso ice cubes!
  • babyccino – skip the espresso shots and serve this homemade latte “steamer” style using just frothed lavender-infused milk. This is a kid friendly variation, and it’s also great for people who don’t drink coffee but want to join in at brunch!

🧰 equipment needed & storage tips

  • espresso maker – espresso makers can range from $20 to over $1,000 so there’s a lot of wiggle room depending on your budget. I have (and love) the Breville Barista Pro espresso machine, but I also like using the Bialette stainless steel stovetop espresso maker for coffee recipes. Note: I opt for the stainless steel over the aluminum because aluminum can impart a metallic taste when preparing very acidic foods, and coffee is pretty acidic.
  • handheld milk frotherthis handheld frother is super convenient when making homemade coffee beverages (affiliate link). It’s a quick and easy way to whip up a cold foam for one!

🫙 how to store homemade lattes

Like most beverages, it is best to consume this drink shortly after making it. You can store it in the fridge if you’re unable to drink the whole thing (or if you forget where you put it until 3pm like I am known to do…#ADHD 😅), but don’t store it for more than 48 hours.

💬 q+a

Do I need to make the lavender honey simple syrup for this recipe?

Yes! The homemade syrup has a flavor that is soooo much better than anything store bought, mainly because it’s made with REAL lavender and honey, not natural or artificial flavoring.

Can I use cold brew instead of espresso?

Of course! You can use cold brew or cold brew concentrate instead of espresso for this latte! You can even use instant coffee.

What does a lavender honey latte taste like?

When prepared at home, this latte has a delicately sweet and floral flavor thanks to the lavender honey simple syrup. At your local coffeehouse, it can have a strong artificial or soapy lavender taste, which is why homemade is always best!
