🛒 ingredients

A top-down view showcases the vibrant ingredients for a pomegranate margarita: pomegranate juice, lime juice, and pomegranate simple syrup paired with lime salt, lime wheels, ice, Cointreau, silver tequila, and fresh pomegranates on a cutting board and countertop.
  • silver tequila – using 100% agave tequila is paramount here. This is what gives you the best flavor or drink without any funky aftertaste and let the pomegranate flavor really shine.
  • pomegranate juice – freshly squeezed pomegranate juice helps to boost the pomegranate flavor of this drink more than store-bought juice. Not sure how to get the juice out of a pomegranate? Don’t worry, check out my post for how to juice a pomegranate!
  • pomegranate simple syrup – pomegranate syrup is also known as grenadine syrup (yeah that’s right it’s NOT cherry syrup!) and this homemade syrup amps up the pomegranate flavor. Homemade grenadine seems a little extra, but trust me it’s worth it when you value quality of flavor above all else. 💅🏻
  • lime juice– freshly squeezed lime juice helps to add that classic margarita taste that plays really nicely with the pomegranate
  • Cointreau – a little bit of orange liqueur gives this drink that classic margarita blend of citrus flavors.
  • saline solution (not pictured) – homemade saline solution is an extra ingredient that’s nice to have especially if you need some help balancing the flavor of your cocktail. Using acidic ingredients like fresh juices can get out of balance sometimes and the pomegranate and the saline solution helps to even out the taste. Trust me it’s magical and you should always keep a bottle on your bar cart.

🍳 step-by-step process for making this drink

to garnish your glass

1: Using a pastry brush, brush lime juice or pomegranate syrup onto your glass.

Two images depict a hand pouring ground oats from a clear container onto a dark green plate. The first shows the container tilted, while the second captures the final bits being shaken out—almost like crafting a perfect pomegranate margarita. Steps are labeled with numbers 2 and 3.

2: Press the glass into a small dish of salt and set aside to dry.

A hand pours pomegranate juice from a small metal cup into a textured glass on a wooden surface. A whole pomegranate and lime appear blurred in the background against a light blue tiled wall, hinting at the freshness of a pomegranate margarita. Sunlight casts shadows across the scene.

1: Add fresh lime juice and homemade pomegranate simple syrup to a cocktail shaker filled with ice.

A hand pours silver tequila from a jigger into a textured glass filled with a red pomegranate margarita. The background showcases a bowl of pomegranates against a tiled wall. The brightly lit scene highlights the vibrant ingredients and inviting atmosphere.

2: Combine silver tequila, fresh pomegranate juice, and Cointreau.

3: Shake vigorously until the ingredients are well mixed, at least 30 seconds.

A person pours a pink cocktail from a shaker into a glass filled with ice on a wooden board. Nearby, pomegranate pieces and a lime half suggest it might be a pomegranate margarita. A teal tiled wall serves as the background, and a second glass is in the scene.

4: Strain into your prepared glass filled with ice.

A person garnishes a vibrant red pomegranate margarita with a lime slice in a glass filled with ice. Another similar cocktail is in the background on the wooden board. A halved lime and ice cubes are placed nearby on the table.

5: Garnish with a lime wheel.

A hand holds a dropper of saline solution for drinks above a glass filled with a vibrant pomegranate margarita cocktail and ice, garnished with a dried lime slice. Another similar drink rests beside it on a wooden board, surrounded by fresh limes and a brown dropper bottle.

6: Taste test before serving and adjust the sweetness with more simple syrup or add a few more drops of saline solution if needed.

💡tips & tricks for getting it right

🍽️ how to serve your pom margaritas

  • appetizers – When most people think of chips and guacamole or chips and queso to partner with margaritas, this seasonal libation pairs really well with appetizers like a honey whipped ricotta, or even a fancier arugula and feta salad.
  • big batch – Margaritas are ✨perfect pitcher cocktails✨ because you can mix everything up before your guests arrive and then have a big batch of cocktails ready to go.
  • frozen – Prefer a frozen margarita instead of one on the rocks? Freeze your pomegranate juice and lime juice and prep the ingredients in a blender. It’ll be delicious without being watered down.

ℹ️ troubleshooting tips

  • too sour or bitter – Fresh citrus juice can be pretty acidic, so if your cocktail has a bit of a bite, try adding one to three drops more of saline solution to balance flavors out
  • weak pomegranate flavor – Using both fresh pomegranate juice and homemade pomegranate syrup creates a deeper, more complex flavor than using just one or the other.

♻️ customize your margaritas

  • store-bought pomegranate juice – if you can’t find fresh pomegranates and still wanna make this drink, it’s totally possible! Just make sure to use high-quality pomegranate juice that ONLY has pomegranate as the single ingredient. Store-bought juices are also likely from concentrate, so the color of your margarita might be darker.
  • orange liqueur alternatives – you can substitute with Grand Marnier or triple sec for Cointreau. Each brings a slightly different orange note, but they’ll all work well in the recipe.

🧰 equipment needed & storage tips

  • cocktail shaker – skip the gym membership, a proper cocktail shaker with a built-in strainer gives your arms a workout while ensuring perfectly mixed and chilled drinks. 💪
  • citrus juicer – fresh juice is non-negotiable for quality cocktails, and a good handheld citrus press makes quick work of those limes.
  • jigger or measuring beakers – precise measurements = perfect drinks. No eyeballing allowed when you’re aiming for that perfect balance of flavors.
  • small dishes – you’ll need these for prepping your glass rims with salt, sugar, or whatever fun garnishes you dream up.
  • pastry brush – for those Instagram-worthy “salt stripe” glass rims that’ll make your drinks look bougie AF.

🫙 can you store leftover margarita?!

Don’t plan to store this drink for more than 24 hours if possible it’s best prepared and consumed on the same day because of the fresh juices

💬 q+a

“How do I make this a mocktail for my friend who’s not drinking?”

To make this a mocktail, you can use a non-alcoholic tequila substitute in place of tequila and a bit of fresh orange juice in place of the Cointreau.

What’s the best kind of tequila for this margarita?

Hands down, silver tequila is the best choice for this seasonal marg. Darker more aged tequilas will mask the flavor of the pomegranate.
