My time in culinary school taught me the importance of using fresh, seasonal ingredients whenever possible. 🌟 August ingredient spotlight & recipe share
Here’s a focused list of what produce is in season in August and some links to recipes for inspiration!
August is PEAK tomato season, so now is the time to live your best tomato life!
When it comes to tomatoes, it doesn’t get better than making a caprese salad! This easy burrata caprese recipe uses multiple varieties of fresh and in-season tomatoes, making the best use of tomato season!
While certain springtime berries may not be the juiciest, blackberries are readily available!
These berries can sometimes be sour, but cooking them unlocks their jammy flavor! Try them in a blackberry syrup recipe, which can then be used in a variety of summery blackberry drinks like this bubbly blackberry basil lemonade and this blackberry iced latte!
Summer melons are ready to be served at any meal…
…even if cantaloupe somehow makes its way into every seasonal fruit cup ever. 🤨 I love using watermelon in beverages by making it into a simple syrup. Once you have that recipe made, you can open up a whole new world of tasty summer cocktails and mocktails! You can also infuse your favorite liquor with watermelon, like this watermelon-infused tequila recipe!
Peppers are ripe for picking in the summer, and they’re good for so much more than salsa!
One of my favorite unexpected ways to use peppers is in drinks! Specifically, jalapeño peppers. Try using fresh peppers in this easy jalapeño pepper infused tequila recipe. You can even customize the infusion to be as spicy as you like, which means that homemade jalapeño margaritas can be as spicy as you like, too!
Basil and other herbs enjoy the heat of the summer–just not the direct sun, please!
Now is the time to make all of your pesto dreams come true! Pesto is one of the most flavorful sauces you can whip up at home, and it’s got so many uses! Pizza, dips, spreads, you name it. You can also freeze your pesto for later!
So, what’s on your shopping list this month?
Peaches & corn have already been making regular appearances in my kitchen, and BLTs are always on the menu as long as ripe tomatoes are around! I haven’t always been the biggest fan of eggplant, but I want to keep curious about it. Maybe this is the month for me to give it a try with a new recipe!
