🧐 all about blackberries…

Blackberries are classified as a type of bramble fruit, which are related to raspberries, and boysenberries, and salmonberries (which are real even outside of Stardew Valley 😅). They are also part of the rose family of plants!

🍳 versatile in recipes – The most popular use of the berries is in crumbles, pies, and jams. But people have been using blackberries to make wine and cordials, like créme de mure, since the 1600’s! You can even use them in savory recipes to add a touch of sweet-tart flavor!

🔀 lots of variety – There are over 375 species of blackberries, with Oregon and Mexico being lead producers in North America. Most berries that are available in the “off season in the US are from Mexico. The bushes grow in thick clumps or on trailing vines, known as “thickets” or “briars.” The plants grow in the wild in many places around the world, and are even considered to be an invasive species!

🪴 popular in gardens – In the 1800’s horticulturalists in the US started hybridizing thornless blackberry bushes, creating the popular varieties backyard gardeners grow today. Blackberry plants produce a huge amount of berries, making them a favorite of gardeners, especially when you get several varieties to extend the growing season.
