🍳 seasonal recipes for the month of September
Here’s a focused list of what produce is in season in September and some links to of my favorite recipes for inspiration! Want even more inspiration? Let me know in the comments below, and I’ll help you out by adding to this post!
Pears always seem to come as second-fiddle to fruits like apples and oranges, but they are star-quality fruits ready for the spotlight in September!
Pear season runs from the month of August through October in the US. They work wonderfully when they are cooked, but they are also wonderful when enjoyed raw, like in fruit salads or even on savory salads and sandwiches. Use them to top your pizza crusts for a fun, slightly sweet twist, or juice them and create a seasonal drink with them, like this autumn rum punch recipe!
While most people are settling into pumpkin season in September, more tropical fruits like watermelon are still available in supermarkets!
Synonymous with summer, this fruit is in season from May through September in the States. It’s most commonly eaten by the slice, but it’s a great fruit to use in cocktails and mocktails! One of my favorite ways to use it is making a quick watermelon simple syrup for beverages. You can also infuse watermelon into tequila for fun seasonal drinks like watermelon ranch water with lime.
Blackberries and raspberries are still showing up in stores through September, giving you more time to enjoy these sweet summer berries into early autumn.
Blackberries have a super long growing season in the United States, with peak season happening in the summer and fall, so September is a great time to pick up a few pints of these juicy berries. They can be a bit tart or sour when underripe, so choose the ripest berries for the best flavor. For inspiration, take a look at this collection of blackberry drink recipes!
Onions and other bulb veggies like shallots will be showing up in markets in September in full force.
There are multiple varieties of onions like sweet onions, red onions, and yellow onions, and each variety brings their own flavor to recipes. Whether you are roasting them, sautéing them, or adding them raw to salads, onions are a great flavorful option in the fall! Shallots have a mild flavor that is somewhere between garlic and onions, making them a wonderful addition to sauces, marinades and shallot salad dressing!
Tomatoes are one of those crops that peak in summer, so September is your last chance to score the freshest tomatoes!
Different varieties are available year-round in the grocery store, but when it comes to seasonal tomatoes, it’s hard to top the heirloom varieties! They make a stunning addition to appetizers and side dishes like a creamy burrata caprese salad, and they’re even wonderful just topped with olive oil and some flaky sea salt. Cherry tomatoes can also be made into sauces for pasta and pizza, or a garlic tomato confit for spreading on crostini crackers!
