If you have 5 minutes, spices, and a can of tomato paste, you basically have pizza sauce ON DEMAND! This pizza sauce from tomato paste is made from pantry staples that you can easily keep on hand year-round, so you’ll never be far from homemade sauce! It’s a go-to sauce in my house, especially on Pizza Fridays, because it requires absolutely no cooking!

Dried spices save the day in this sauce, combined with garlic powder and onion powder, too! The blend of seasonings adds to the richness of tomato paste for a bold and flavorful sauce you won’t believe came together in minutes. It’s perfect when you don’t have the time to make your own tomato sauce from fresh tomatoes but you still want to top your pizza dough with something made with love. 🥰

Wanna create the perfect pizza night? Serve your pizzas with a simple side salad and fresh vinaigrette dressing for a wholesome meal. Wash everything down with a classic lemon Italian soda (and add a shot of homemade limoncello liqueur for the grown-ups 😜)!

👀 the secret sauce…

✨ the flavor: This recipe hits The Oomph, The Pop, and The Balancing Act, using easy-to-find dried spices to balance the bold acidity of tomato paste!

🎯 the method: Season the tomato paste, thin with water if needed, and you’re ready to rock!

🏆 the win: This sauce is easy to customize to your liking, whether you love garlic or herbs, you can add whichever flavors you like best!

🛒 ingredients for tomato paste pizza sauce

Ingredients for a pasta sauce are laid out: a bowl of tomato paste, including a jar of Bianco DiNapoli tomato paste perfect for pizza sauce, water, a lemon, and six small dishes with garlic, parsley, onion, basil, salt, and oregano. Salt and pepper shakers are also in view.
  • tomato paste – all tomato paste is not created equally, and I have OPINIONS of choosing the best. Make sure you choose a tomato paste that is 100% tomatoes, and maaaybe salt. I prefer tomato paste that is organic and (of course) from Italy. Extra points if it’s made from roma tomatoes or san marzano tomatoes.
  • dried herbs & spicesgasp 😱 I know… normally I’m screaming that “fresh is best” a la Ina Garten, and you can TOTALLY use fresh herbs and spices in your sauce, but! Dried herbs and spices work so nicely in this sauce because of the concentrated flavor of tomato paste. I love to play with the following flavors: garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, dried basil, and of course salt & pepper
  • water – water helps to make the sauce spreadable and less thick than pure tomato paste. If you are using fresh cheese like mozzarella or ricotta, you will want to use less water than if you are using block cheese which is lower in moisture content.

Two side-by-side images show hands adding and mixing spices into a bowl of tomato paste pizza sauce on a green plate. The left image features a spoon sprinkling spices, while the right shows stirring with a spoon.

Step 3: Add water gradually while stirring until you reach the desired consistency.

Step 4: Mix thoroughly until well incorporated.

Two images: left shows a hand mixing tomato paste pizza sauce in a bowl beside a tray of spices; right shows a hand spreading tomato sauce on small pizza dough rounds on a baking sheet. Both images are bright and sunlit.

Step 5: Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.

Step 6: Use your sauce immediately, or store it for later use.

Side-by-side images of tomato paste pizza sauce: the left shows a thinner sauce labeled more water, and the right shows a thicker sauce labeled less water. Both are being stirred with a spoon.

Start with less water than you think you need at first – you can always add more to thin the sauce, but it’s harder to thicken it back up!

💡tips & tricks for getting it right

ℹ️ troubleshooting tips

  • too thick or paste-like – if your sauce is too thick and hard to spread, gradually add more water 1 tablespoon at a time until you reach your desired consistency
  • too thin – if your sauce is too watery or thin, you can add more tomato paste 1 tsp at a time.
  • metallic taste – canned tomato paste can have a metallic taste if it’s canned using lower-quality metals like aluminum. Use high-quality Italian tomato paste in glass jars or ones marked as being BPA-free.

🍽️ how to use your homemade pizza sauce

  • on pizza – this is the perfect sauce for making homemade pizza, whether you top a classic pizza dough, mini bite-sized pizzas, or even pizza rolls!
  • dipping sauce – this sauce doubles as a dipping sauce for extra pizza crust or pizza bombs! Add a bit more water to make it extra saucy and dippable!
  • freeze it – I love making a whole jar or can of tomato sauce from this recipe and then freezing it for later use. I use these souper cubes trays to freeze them in perfect 2 TBSP portions and two cubes are just the right amount for a standard pizza!

♻️ customize your tomato paste sauce

  • fresh herbs – got an herb garden? You can swap fresh herbs for the dried one for even fresher flavor! Use double the amount of fresh herbs as dried herbs, because dried herbs are more concentrated in flavor.
  • spicy – create an arrabbiata style sauce by adding some crushed red pepper or Calabrian chili powder!

🫙 storing unused tomato sauce

Store any unused sauce in the fridge for up to 3 days, or freeze for longer-term storage.

💬 q+a

Pizza sauce should be spreadable but not watery. If your sauce is too thin, you can add more tomato paste, one teaspoon at a time. If it’s too thick, you can add more water, one ounce at a time.

Classic Italian seasonings work best: dried oregano, basil, garlic powder, and a pinch of red pepper flakes if you like spice!

This can happen with canned tomato paste, depending on what it is canned in. This is why I prefer tomato paste in glass jars or cans marked as being BPA-free.

This is the perfect pizza sauce- , quick and tasty! Where do you get your tomato paste from? And what brands do you recommend?

    1. Thanks for your review and comment, Judy! My current favorite brand is in the ingredient photo in this post, it’s called “Bionaturae Organic Tomato Paste” and I’ve found it at Whole Foods, Sprouts Market, and Publix near me! They have a store locator on their website, and I saw it’s available online at Thrive Market, too. It’s a bit more expensive, but it tastes SO GOOD it’s worth it! 🥫💕
